    Full-Time Planner:

    Munekiyo Hiraga is seeking a full-time planner to work with clients on environmental review documents, land use entitlement processes, community outreach, feasibility studies, and other areas of project implementation. The position may be based in our Maui or Oahu office.

    The ideal candidate will have the following preferred background and qualifications:

    1. Alignment with MH’s core values of Selflessness, Humility, and Gratitude
    2. Master’s Degree in urban and regional planning or a similar field (Master’s degree preferred)
    3. Five to seven years of professional experience in planning or related field
    4. Excellent communication, research, writing, and critical thinking skills
    5. Experience in project management; ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines to support our mission of “Excellence in Process Management”.
    6. Willingness and ability to work effectively as a member of multidisciplinary teams
    7. American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification is a plus.
    8. Strong critical thinking and organizational skills

    Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

    • Research and analysis in support of various environmental, technical, or feasibility studies
    • Preparation of Environmental Assessments and Environmental Impact Statement documents
    • Preparation of land use entitlement applications
    • Coordination with Federal, State, and County agencies on application processing and regulatory compliance
    • Assist Clients in processing construction permits
    • Coordination with clients, technical consultants, and other members of the project team
    • Presentations to decision-making bodies such as Planning Commissions, Boards, or Councils
    • Formulate and implement community engagement strategies that ensures respectful and transparent communication/dialogue throughout each project assignment

    Internship Program:

    Ever wonder how your community or island is developed? Interested in shaping your community’s future? Munekiyo Hiraga, an urban planning and project management consulting firm, is seeking interested candidates for our internship program.  Candidates should be interested in learning more about land use planning and processes in the State of Hawai‘i.  The internship may be in our Maui or Oahu office.  The internship curriculum would be developed with the candidate, depending on the desired focus and duration of the program.  Potential areas of studies include:

    • Land use permitting process (such as Special Use permitting, Change of Zoning, Special Management Area, Shoreline permitting, etc.)
    • Long Range Planning documents (such as Community Plans or Island Plans)
    • Legislation and regulatory practices related to land use
    • Community Outreach and Engagement
    • Building/Construction Permit Review processes
    • Geographical Information System (GIS) mapping
    • Specialized land use research and reports

    Hands on experiences would be planned for the internship; examples may include:

    • Assistance with preparation of land use application documents
    • Research utilizing County Code, Hawai’i Revised Statutes or other land use policies
    • Observation at County Council, Boards and/or Commission meetings
    • Assistance with community outreach or engagement programs

    Ideal candidate qualifications include:

    1. Current Urban Planning, Political Science, Public Administration, Environmental Studies, or Communications college major or coursework focus
    2. High School Senior with an interest in local land use planning
    3. Strong written and verbal communication skills
    4. Willingness to work in teams and independently
    5. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
