Kari was born and raised on the island of Maui. Upon graduating from Baldwin High School, Kari attended the University of Washington on a four year athletic scholarship for tennis. Kari majored in English with a minor in History and Classical Studies. She enjoyed her time in the Pacific Northwest but Hawaii was calling her home. She attended Chaminade University and obtained her Masters of Science in Psychology and began her career as a counselor and teacher for the Department of Education and subsequently, the University of Hawaii Maui College. During her time spent in post-secondary education, Kari received her Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership from the University of Southern California.

Community is at the core of what drives Kari. The value of helping others and working together so everyone can succeed is evident in the non-profit work Kari was involved in and supports. From running Maui United Way to volunteering on various boards, such as Women Helping Women, American Red Cross, Wailuku Junior Tennis Club, Wailuku Community Association, among others, the love of her community is the common denominator.

In her spare time, Kari enjoys dancing hula, practicing yoga, creating macramé, surfing, traveling, and spending time with her husband and their three children.

    Something you didn’t know:
Kari is afraid of turbulence during flights and will grab anyone seated next to her when it gets bumpy.
