    Kauanoe Batangan, Senior Associate

Along with his siblings and several cousins, Kauanoe grew up in Kahului, Hawaii, where his parents and grandparents built neighboring homes in an early increment of Dream City. He has a strong connection to Maui and is committed to ensuring that the island’s sustainable development maintains the integrity of local values and traditions.

Kauanoe has government experience on the Federal, State, and County levels. Prior to joining Munekiyo Hiraga, he served as an aide to United States Senator Daniel Akaka, Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, and Maui County Councilmember Yuki Lei Sugimura. He also worked with the Office of Hawaiian Affairs to establish the Native Hawaiian Congressional Fellowship, now the Daniel K. Akaka Congressional Fellowship.

Kauanoe was one of the original eighty students at Kamehameha Schools Maui, which he attended throughout elementary, middle, and high school. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Stanford University and has advanced degrees from the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Public Policy and Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. Kauanoe is a member of the Royal Order of Kamehameha I and has served on the board of directors for the Maui Historical Society, Maui Filipino Chamber of Commerce, and Tri-Isle Resource Conservation and Development Council.

Kauanoe enjoys Safeway’s Five Dollar Fridays. His favorite sales are for Haagen-Dazs and Talenti.
